Resources for Parents and Families Navigating an ASD Diagnosis

Receiving an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis for your child can be overwhelming. The journey to understanding and supporting your child can feel daunting, but remember, you are not alone. There are many resources and supports available to help you navigate this new path, and BES is here to help you every step of the way.

Understanding Insurance Options

Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Plan (MCHP)
Ensuring your child has the necessary health coverage is crucial. MCHP offers comprehensive health care coverage for children up to age 19. Learn more about MCHP and determine your eligibility by working with Maryland Health Connection.

Funding Support

Maryland’s Autism Waiver Program
Maryland’s Autism Waiver Program provides community-based, long-term therapeutic services and support to eligible children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to enable home and community living as an alternative to institutional care. The program is administered through a partnership between the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), which oversees the state’s Medicaid program.

To apply for the Autism Waiver Program, families must contact the Autism Waiver Registry at 1-866-417-3480 to be eligible when a vacancy occurs. Eligibility criteria include having a current diagnosis of ASD, being aged between 1 and 21 years old, residing in Maryland, having an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) with at least 15 hours per week of special education services, meeting financial eligibility for Medical Assistance, and being able to be safely maintained at home with waiver services.

The Autism Waiver Program includes services like adult life planning, environmental accessibility adaptations, family consultation, intensive individual support services, residential habilitation, respite care, and therapeutic integration. The application process can take several months due to high demand and the limited number of slots available. For more information about the Autism Waiver, view this fact sheet or call 1-866-417-3480.

Low Intensity Support Services (LISS)
Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) funding is designed to help children and adults with developmental disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), enhance their quality of life and promote community inclusion.

LISS grants can be used for a variety of needs, such as respite care, therapeutic services, adaptive equipment, and more. Families can apply for LISS funding twice a year during designated application periods.

To apply, visit the Maryland Department of Disabilities Administration’s LISS webpage and follow the application instructions. Applications can be submitted to Penn-Mar Human Services, Attn: LISS Unit, 310 Old Freeland Road, Freeland, Maryland 21053. For additional assistance, you can contact their toll-free number at 877-282-8202 or TTY at 711.
